CENTRAL PARK

I didn't realize until today, that yesterday, May 19th when I took this walk, was the anniversary of the day my father suffered a stroke, was taken to hospital and died the following morning, May 20th. For some reason, unbeknownst to me at the time, I felt close to him, thought about him a lot and felt grateful that he'd been my father. This is a letter I sent to Central Park Conservancy.

Central Park Conservancy

I felt compelled to write.

Yesterday afternoon (Sunday) it was raining but warm so I took myself off to the Park for a walk.

I strolled along the path beside the road running along the east side from the Museum up past the 91st St. entrance, headed further north and then crossed over and back again by the Great Lawn. I honestly don’t believe Heaven could be more breathtakingly beautiful or ethereal than the Park was yesterday.

The rain made the walkways, the trees and bushes brilliantly shiny, the foliage was freshly green and so, so abundant providing green cathedral canopies, there were very few people because of the rain. I hadn’t seen the refurbished walkway before, the crisp granite curbs and the brickwork around the tree bases as well as all the new benches. Then on the other side of the road was the bank leading up to the reservoir, glorious with a multitude of colorful blooming bushes.

I spent a couple of hours in the Park, it was probably one of the most beautiful nature experiences I’ve ever had – of course it was extraordinary to practically have the whole Park to myself – such a rare privilege. I’m British and often feel nostalgic about my home country but yesterday, because of the weather and the beauty of the Park I had a wonderful sensation of being “home.”

I used to contribute to the Conservancy regularly but with the economic downturn have had to tighten the belt, but without a doubt it’s a worthy cause to support and when circumstances permit I will again do my part. In the meantime I am so very grateful for the great work the Conservancy does – the Park is undoubtedly the jewel of the City.
